Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art from the aunt Denise. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt the space she required during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theater. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself through the medium of art. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the civil rights march of the past across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. As studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for the broadcast media. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of one member of the jury and examine their junk. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to continue in the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
